On a beautiful spring evening on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at the Slavic Conservatory of Music in the city of Bagnolet, at precisely 8:30 p.m., four musicians abolished the boundaries of time and space. For a little over fifty-four minutes, Andrea, Apostolos, and Srdjan accompanied pianist and composer Carlo Maria Nartoni, drawing from his score an open musical geography, a space of multiple affiliations and varied borrowings. The grace and magic of this evening might have remained ephemeral had it not been for the foresight of the musicians, who decided to record the concert, entitled Beyond Borders. This
performance gave rise to an eponymous album that now allows us to immerse ourselves in music that blends contemporary jazz and Mediterranean sounds.

Carlo Maria Nartoni Quartet
– Beyond Borders
Carlo Maria Nartoni – piano, compositions
Andrea Romani – flute, ney
Apostolos Sideris – double bass
Srdjan Ivanovic – percussion
Born in Paris, the project brings together four musicians from diverse countries and cultures: from Italy to Greece, from Turkey to Bosnia. This diversity is reflected in the music, which blends contemporary jazz with the sounds and atmospheres of the Mediterranean and the Middle East. The result is a language rich in nuances, where the writing opens up to improvisation and dialogue.
The compositions unfold like a suite, a narrative in several movements that evokes the ancient idea of musical travel. Some melodies—simple songs and dances—are named after the places that inspired them: Balat, composed while traveling through the eponymous district of Istanbul, or Apricale, born in a medieval village in Liguria.
These real landscapes are also complemented by interior and symbolic dimensions. Lost, for example, is inspired by the feeling of disorientation one feels when immersing oneself in an unknown culture: a fertile loss, which awakens the senses and opens one to a deeper listening.
"Beyond Borders" isn't just a title: it's an invitation. In a world that seems to be closing in ever more—between borders, mistrust, and walls, visible or invisible—this project seeks the opposite: openness.
Openness to others, to the unknown, to difference. Openness to the beauty of encounter, to the fragility that makes us human, to the freedom to find meaning beyond the known maps.
Music thus becomes a space for listening and recognition, a place where differences do not separate, but intertwine.
A journey between real and imaginary places, discovering soundscapes that speak to the soul, evoking memories, emotions and roots.
